Traditional sewing is very important for our people. It’s a way we can show the world what our elders have taught us and what comes from our community.
I use patterns I got from my great grandma. Now my girls have those patterns, too.
I remember my grandma told me that if you don’t know how to do something you could always watch other people around you and you can learn that way. So that’s what I did. I see other sewing and get different ideas. Once I got into sewing, I got more ideas of what I wanted to do and got more creative with my designs. I choose all the colours without thinking and then it is completed and it is good when it turns out so nice.
I love making new things. When I have completed a project I am so proud and get so much inspiration from when someone uses it. I made two wraparounds for my dad and one for my son. I was very proud when I showed mom. Then my dad took it and said it was beautiful. And it was the most beautiful moment I had with my dad because he was so proud of me. It was the most beautiful work I had ever done.
I always tell young girls about sewing, such as how I started and how you can learn by watching and doing it yourself. I continue doing that. And I know now I can do anything with the beadwork and designs.
