Story for Lucy Lomen

I like to make beaded slippers, mitts, gloves, purses, wraparounds and gun cases from traditionally tanned moose hide. When I was 18, I moved to Fort Simpson from Nahanni Butte. My cousins and my sister-in-law showed me how to sew and bead. I didn’t learn from my mom like many others did.

I also work on tanning moose hides with my daughter. In the springtime we take out our hide from the fall and work on it. We work on it for about two weeks and then it is done.

When I am done making a piece, I am really happy about being done. I like to use flower designs that are primary colours like red, blue and green with white. I draw my own designs but I use patterns from a few others, too. I stay home by myself and sit outside and enjoy the weather and sew. I like to do beadwork for my grandson.
